Torpedoed here by U-217, 3 February 1943, homeward bound. Her seventy crew took to four open boats and sailed a thousand miles west. The first reached Guadeloupe after seventeen days. The second made Antigua a day later. After twenty, the third landed on Jost Van Dyke and the last was found at sea. Sixty seven survived.
In the Antigua boat sat a trainee wireless operator. His signals were received. His family builds on, under his ship's name.
